A response to some of the comments on the last meme.

I’d like to respond to some of the comments left on the last meme posted about prayer.

First let me say that at no time have I said anyone CAN’T pray.  That is an individual choice of which I have no need in preventing anyone from doing.

Having said that, I’d like to point up that prayer DOESN’T DO SHIT!  Yep that’s right it doesn’t do shit.  Example, if those who first responded to the bombings in Boston had stood around and prayed instead of applying tourniquets to the damaged limbs of the victims, how many more would have died?  If the doctors in the trauma centers the victims were taken to, had stood around and prayed instead of using the training they had to save the lives of the victims, how many more of them would have died?

Try praying for someone to rise from the dead, see where that gets you.  Try praying for a person suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease and see if that person experiences a cure.  Praying may make you feel warm and fuzzy on the inside, but it doesn’t do shit for the person being prayed for.

To the person who compared prayer with meditation (chuckle) I have to respectfully disagree.  Prayer is beseeching some deity, mother of god, or if you’re catholic, a plethora of saints to intervene on behalf of the person you are praying for, to cure them of what they may have.  Ironically, nothing ever happens, the person is not cured and all that praying falls on supernatural deaf ears.  If those supernatural ears ever existed in the first place.  Meditation on the other hand refers to a broad variety of practices that includes techniques designed to promote relaxation, build internal energy (chi, ki, prana, etc.) and develop compassion, love, patience, generosity and forgiveness. I know several atheists who practice meditation.  Since meditation is the practice of focusing the mind, and not beseeching a none existent deity to intervene on your behalf, it’s not that unusual for an atheist to practice some form of meditation.

Let me end with the previous statement of the meme of yesterday, Prayer doesn’t do shit!

I’m sure you’ve received many thanks for your “Be Very Offended” post, but here’s mine, related to morals:

Two months ago a Christian friend was grilling me about my atheism. He’s lived in LA for many years, and we don’t see each other much, so I can see why my atheism was news to him (I’m in MD).

At one point he asks, “So why aren’t you a giant asshole?” (Direct quote!)

I was baffled. The conversation continued: I explained why I’m not be a thief, philanderer, or murderer.

But his initial question answered itself. You don’t need a god to be a decent person….

But the entire time I just wanted to say, “I just sunk your battleship!” Oh, to be an atheist raised in the 80’s! It’s the best!

Aaaanyway, this is my way of saying thank you! Every day I can get on Tumblr and have a little reminder that there are folks who are kind…just because. Kind for no other reason that they CAN be kind. Not because they have to, but because they choose to.

And you make me laugh while doing it.

THANK YOU!

jacob-mcrae asked: Stephen Fry once said, "It's now very common to hear people say, "I'm rather offended by that", as if that gives them certain rights. It's no more than a whine. It has no meaning, it has no purpose, it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. "I'm offended by that." Well, so fucking what?" [End quote] I don't know what has risen from all of the offended commentary you've been getting, but it has always been my practice to not care if I offend other people for me doing my own business with me.

always-saylove asked: I would like to go against what the last ask just said and say that I think the "Be Offended" post is brilliant. I never understood why offense only went one way, and I commend you for pointing it out. Keep doing what you do.

Thanks.  We try to have some serious posts along with humorous posts.

But I stand by that post and my response to “set-all-zippers-free”

I’d like to clarify that I do not hate those who are religious, nor would I say I hate them for their beliefs.  Hate is a strong word and I avoid it in my life.  But that doesn’t mean I have to tolerate their beliefs or give those beliefs respect.  They are free to believe as they choose, just as I’m free to point up their foolishness.  I’ve never found religion to be on the right side of what is good, its all about power, control and MONEY!

del-bubblegumbitch asked: For real though: fuck you. I thought this blog was hilarious, but that "be very offended" post was unreasonable. Some of the things are annoying, like being sold a shitty fairy tale that is unreasonable and outlandish, but some of it isn't that big a deal. Telling people to be very offended even when someone doesn't do anything, simply for their beliefs, you are creating antagonists. Sure, I hate a lot of religious zealots that attack others, but I hate non-religious assholes just as much.

Excuse me, but those who follow this blog are NOT required to follow it, nor are they required to agree with all or anything that we post.

Now kindly go fuck yourself.

That is all.
